Man Utd plans to sign EIGHT new playersby Paul Vegas14 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United have plans to sign EIGHT new players over the next two summer transfer windows.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have had a woeful start to the season and currently sit 15 points behind leaders Liverpool already after just eight matches. The Telegraph says United are well aware of their need to improve their playing staff and will make a number of signings over the next two summers. One of those incomings could be brought forward to January too amid growing concern that a challenge for Champions League football could already be on the rocks. It is claimed the club believe they are “six players short of challenging for major honours” and the overhaul of players will be led by Solskjaer, who still has the full backing of the club.”Ole is looking at a three-year vision of a squad. It will be an evolution over the coming years,” a source said. “We are at base camp now.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

BTN.You’ve heard it a lot over the years.A former Ohio State football player introduces himself during an NFL broadcast and concludes his introduction with an emphatic, “The Ohio State University.”Who started that tradition?Apparently, it was former Buckeye running back Robert Smith.“It is true,” Smith said on the Big Ten Network earlier this week. “It was the official name of the university and they made a point in around 1994 to emphasize it.”It was Robert Smith who started saying THE Ohio State University in the NFL introductions! pic.twitter.com/F6h7BF4dYb— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) September 1, 2016Smith played at Ohio State in the early 1990s before going on to star in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings. Manchester City remain in the hunt for four titles as they prepare for their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg encounter with League One side Burton.Pep Guardiola’s men swept past Rotherham 7-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday, four days after closing the gap at the top of the Premier League table with an important 2-1 success over Liverpool.Albion, meanwhile, are simply fighting for a playoff spot in English football’s third tier and could not have dreamed of being in this position when the season began. Match Preview Burton Albion have undoubtedly been the story of the Carabao Cup this season, having made apparently impossible progress to the semi-final of the competition. They had never been beyond the last-16 of any national knockout tournament previously. However, they are not the only lower-league club in recent years to enjoy such a run and as they prepare for two matches against the millionaires of Manchester City they do so with Bradford City’s exploits in 2013 in mind. That season, Bradford knocked out three Premier League clubs as they reached the final at Wembley.Burton’s run may not have been quite so dazzling, but they have still eliminated Burnley, as well as three Championship sides to reach the final four.“When we saw the draw on Sky and there were four teams in the draw it started with No 1 Burton Albion. Then we looked down and we saw Chelsea, wow! Then we saw Manchester City, wow! Then we saw Tottenham, wow!” chairman Ben Robinson told Sky Sports News.“It is very much a case of pinching ourselves and thinking it is another great occasion to look forward to.“Manchester City are the current Premier League champions, it is over two legs so we will go there on Wednesday and we will enjoy the occasion but I think it is about damage limitation after seeing the demolition of Rotherham in the FA Cup on Sunday.”City had six different scorers at the weekend as they dismantled Rotherham, a side in a higher league than Burton, 7-0 in the FA Cup.Pep Guardiola’s side are unlikely to have little time for romanticism either, as their packed scheduled combined with their position four points behind Liverpool in the league means that they will try to finish this tie off at the first time of asking.Last season he was almost stung by deploying a weakened team at this stage of the competition against Bristol City as they scraped to a 2-1 home win and he will be eager to avoid such an eventuality again.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is not ruling out a return to the club in a director of football capacity but wants assurances before committing to the role. The 40-year-old spent 12 years of his playing career at Old Trafford, winning 14 trophies in total including six Premier League titles and the Champions League. He has been identified as one of the frontrunners to become United’s first technical director, having already sat down with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for an initial discussion. The Red Devils are hoping to have the position filled before the start of the 2019-20 campaign, but Ferdinand has reservations over taking the job.Although the one-time England international is interested in a return to United, he is unsure over the exact details of the role in question.”It all depends on the shape of the job,” Ferdinand told the Telegraph. “I don’t think it’s all been outlined at Man United in terms of ‘that’s the job and this is the description’. I think there’s a lot to talk about within that.”To be fair to Man United, in that kind of role, the responsibility that comes with that, you can’t lie and say that that’s not a turn-on.”Because you are helping to shape the fortunes of a club of that stature. That’s a huge job.”All the boxes would have to be ticked that you’ve got in your head before considering something like that.”I think decisions made at a football club – not all (but) some of them – should come with a football thought process in the background somewhere, (someone) that understands that side of it and can make that kind of decision.”Despite maintaining their commercial success, United have struggled on the pitch since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, with four managers drafted in to fill his sizeable shoes.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the latest to take up the mantle, but he was only able to guide the team to a sixth-place Premier League finish last season, after earning a permanent contract in March.Ferdinand feels his old club need to rediscover their identity in order to start moving forward again, referencing Liverpool and Manchester City’s blueprint for success as an example to follow.”Man United are looking for their ideology still,” he said.”They went away from it after Sir Alex Ferguson, they tried to take it on under different managers and it didn’t work, so they are still searching.”There needs to be some sort of story at a football club for the stars and the staff to believe in.”Liverpool have got that, Jurgen Klopp has created that. Man City have got that – Pep (Guardiola) has created that. But they have been allowed to create it. They have had time.”Do I think Man United can do that? I think time will tell – Ole has a window to work in and then he has to put that jigsaw in place.”It is a big gap between Man City, Liverpool and Spurs. They will build again, they will recruit again.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.

I just need to keep playing and hope I stay clear of injuries. I just have to keep working hard and helping the team. That’s the main thing.”Their hosts though will be determined to give a good account of themselves, with their coach Brian Schmetzer having spoken about the desire to impress for supporters against a European giant.“I want the guys who step on the field to make sure they’re focused on Dortmund because we obviously want to put on a performance,” he told their website. “Fans are paying money to watch us play. So, we need to make sure that the group that gets out there is prepared, organized and anxious to play.”
GLENDALE, AZ – DECEMBER 31: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes looks on against the Clemson Tigers during the 2016 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium on December 31, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)Ohio State announced last week that head football coach Urban Meyer was being suspended for the first three games of the 2018 season as a result of the investigation into his handling of domestic violence allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith. The punishment for Meyer was decided after a lengthy Ohio State Board of Trustees meeting that began at 9 a.m. last Wednesday and ended close to 10 p.m.One Ohio State trustee has reportedly resigned from the board as a result of the punishment handed down to Meyer. He didn’t think it was harsh enough. The New York Times has more:An Ohio State trustee has resigned, saying a three-game suspension of the football coach Urban Meyer should have been more “profound” for his mishandling of domestic violence accusations against an assistant coach and for tolerating years of the assistant’s misbehavior. The trustee, Jeffrey Wadsworth, said in an interview on Thursday that he stepped down from the board shortly after the university announced Mr. Meyer’s punishment last week.“I didn’t feel that I’d seen high-integrity behavior,” Mr. Wadsworth said of Mr. Meyer. The trustee who resigned claims he was the only person pushing for a harsher punishment for Meyer. It’s unclear how much harsher of a punishment he was pushing for.Meyer is suspended for the first three games of the season, but he’s able to return to practice after the season-opening game on Saturday.Ohio State opens its season on Sept. 1 against Oregon State.

(Photo by Eric Francis/Getty Images)Nebraska had its scheduled season opener against Akron cancelled due to inclement weather. As a result, the Huskers have an opening on their schedule.October 27 is Nebraska’s scheduled bye, so that’s when a game would most likely have to occur. There are several options for the Huskers. It seems like several people are suggesting UCF, who also has an open date on October 27 and just had its game cancelled for this coming weekend due to Hurricane Florence. That would be a dream story line game, seeing Scott Frost coach against his former program.Holy moly. COLUMBUS, OH – SEPTEMBER 08: Acting head coach Ryan Day of the Ohio State Buckeyes looks on before the game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Ohio Stadium on September 8, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)Ohio State enters a new era in 2019, with Ryan Day taking over the reins for Urban Meyer. Once again, the Buckeyes will be breaking in a new starting quarterback as well.Dwayne Haskins stepped in for J.T. Barrett in 2018, and exceeded expectations. Haskins smashed records en route to becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist and establishing himself as the top quarterback in this year’s draft. All season long, it looked like Tate Martell was set to step in for Haskins in 2019, but then Georgia five-star freshman Justin Fields transferred in and everything changed. Martell did not want to wait and see if Fields obtains a waiver to play immediately, opting instead to transfer to Miami.Even with Fields in the fold, Ohio State’s quarterback depth is think, which is why ESPN named it the biggest concern for the Buckeyes right now.The Buckeyes have seen record-setting quarterback Dwayne Haskins enter the NFL draft and backup Tate Martell transfer to Miami. If transfer quarterback Justin Fields is not eligible immediately in 2019, Matthew Baldwin is the next man up and really the only other option. Ohio State had a quarterback committed in the 2019 class in Dwan Mathis, but he flipped to Georgia on signing day. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Baldwin is yet to see any game action and would be leading a team with a new head coach and a lot of eyes watching to see what plays out in Ryan Day’s first season taking over for Urban Meyer. If Fields can play right away, he and Baldwin would be Ohio State’s top two options, as of now. It seems likely that the Buckeyes will be involved in the grad transfer market at the position.Texas A&M’s Nick Starkel has emerged as a potential option, as Ohio State is reportedly one of the schools he is considering. However, the question with Starkel and any other veteran transfer is would they be willing to come to Ohio State for a marginal role as a backup.Texas A&M QB Nick Starkel will hit the transfer portal any minute now & will not participate in spring practice, he said. Will complete 120 hours before July & should be on new campus July 1. Said he’s looking at Duke, Ohio State, SMU & Arizona (former HC Kevin Sumlin).— ?????? ?. ????? (@Travis_L_Brown) January 23, 2019If Starkel does come to Columbus and in effect takes Martell’s spot, that would be incredibly ironic considering the connection the two of them have from back when Martell was an A&M commit.
